about

The ‘Maïdan/I7LI’ EP by Caen, France-based trio Veik was originally released on cassette in 2017 and is now being reissued on vinyl for the first time, with a limited 10” release courtesy of Fuzz Club Records. On the A-side are the two original songs, both trading in propulsive synthesised krautrock, and on the B-side are two brand new remixes by fellow Caen experimental duo Glass and Paris-based electronic composer/producer Tryphème.

The draft of ‘Maïdan’ was written by drummer/vocalist Boris Collet some time before he founded Veik alongside Adrien Legrand and Vincent Condominas. “The track refers to the Ukrainian revolution of 2014. The two-track EP deals with the theme of contemporary revolutions but also with the spaces/places that were symbols of them. The colour tracings on the artwork correspond to imagined itineraries of the protests between symbolic places of revolutionary movements and places of power: green for the 2009 Iranian protests (Persian Spring), the Orange Revolution for Ukraine, red for the 2011 Egyptian revolution.”

“‘I7LI’ is a quasi-instrumental song a la Cavern of Antimatter”, Boris adds: “The lyrics are rather vague, ethereal. According to my notes of the time, it evokes ‘the choices we can make in our lives, how to live our contradictions, to submit to comfort while wanting passion, to give in to routine but to need it, to push our limits or to get out of your comfort zone’.”
